CV Breakdown - Writing up Your Past Work Experience - Part 4 - 10 Example

In the final part of our CV work experience series we've given you some examples you could use across a wide range of different careers.

For each role we've provided a very brief job description, listed 10 examples of responsibilities and 5 examples of achievements and success stories to give as wide a range of examples as possible. If you have no prior work experience, check out example 2 below, you can still draw on your education and personal experience to sell yourself.

But remember, each application will also be slightly different, but try to aim for around 3-7 responsibilities per past role and one major achievement accompanied by 2-4 success stories. The more jobs you have, the fewer responsibilities and achievement you need to list. The more concise you are the better, and keeping clear headings and an easily readable format helps too.

These examples are quite general to try and help as many as possible, but remember to tailor your CV work experience to the specific job you're applying for. Also feel free to play around with the format a little, but make sure things are obvious, clear and concise. We've given a lot of examples below, remember to pick your best and keep things brief!

Insurance Sales Agent

March 20XX to June 20XX - Insurance Sales Agent at XYZ Company

Summary

Generating new business, advising current customers on how best to meet their needs and supporting my team in achieving monthly targets.

Responsibilities

  • Built lasting relationships with a core group of customers whilst developing an ability to regularly upsell to those who needed additional services.
  • Daily attention to detail ensured all insurance policies were completed with 100% accuracy.
  • Staying up to date with the latest regulatory requirements allowed me to provide the best advice for my customers.
  • Able to quickly assess needs and direct customers to the correct product in a timely manner.
  • A keen mind for numbers meant policies were processed quickly and error free.

Recent University Graduate - No prior work experience

September 20XX to August 20XX - 1st Class Electrical Engineering Degree from ABC Town University

Summary

Took part in leading edge research projects in the electrical engineering field whilst studying towards my degree.

Responsibilities

  • Required to give weekly presentations in which I received high marks for verbal communication skills.
  • Specialised in cutting edge electrical engineering research and applied latest technologies to research.
  • Developed excellent written communication skills through frequent report writing.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving was needed on a daily basis to overcome problems that arose from research.
  • Took on board constructive criticism and able to evidence how I made tangible improvements to my work.
  • Time management and forward planning were critical responsibilities through my degree process, never once missing deadlines.
  • We were required to apply a high degree of self-motivation and encouraged to work independently for parts of the course.

Summary

Tasked with the design, production and implementation of IT software training programmes across a multinational corporation.

Responsibilities

  • Producing high quality training plans in a wide range of software applications for more than 2000 staff.
  • Assessing the different training requirements of each department and tailoring programmes to meet specific needs.
  • Through both 1-2-1 training and large group events I was required to demonstrate excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Able to utilise new technology to complete remote training and collate online courses for staff based globally.
